A Biblical Perspective of Education

Which American President made the following claim?

“A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.”

It was Theodore Roosevelt—a highly educated Harvard graduate. Do you believe his statement to be true? Do your students?

Graduation time is upon us. It is a time of great celebration for many students as they look back on what has been accomplished and look forward to new possibilities, goals, and vocations. It is also a good time to reflect on how we as Christians are to view education from a distinctly biblical perspective. For example, we should affirm that…

  • All knowledge—including reading, writing, math, history, science, music, art, and geography—and understanding is from God (Proverbs 2:6).
  • Knowledge begins with recognizing God’s rightful place and authority in all things (Proverbs 1:7a; Psalm 119:130).
  • The Bible is the most important source of knowledge, as it is able to make us wise for salvation (2 Timothy 3:14-15).
  • All other knowledge is to help our understanding of biblical truth and the greatness of God (Psalm 19:1-2; 145:5b-6).
  • Knowledge is to equip us for good works (Ephesians 2:8-10).

In summary, we could say that…Education is the process of acquiring knowledge about God and His world, with the goal of becoming wise for salvation, and then being equipped to do good works, so that God would be glorified.

So, whether our children and students are educated at home, or in private or public schools, let us be careful to give them a biblical perspective of education—one that prepares them and inspires them to…

Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge (Proverbs 23:12).

… let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Should We Require Obedience from Unsaved Children?

Does the above sound like a trick question? Something meant to stir up the “legalism” wars? It is not meant that way. It’s really a very important and practical question in our homes, churches, and classrooms. As parents and teachers, we should be rightly concerned with the threat of legalism in our children. It is a real danger that lurks in every human heart. Children raised in Christian homes, where they are watching their parents’ gospel-empowered sanctification, may be even more prone to equate being obedient with a means of earning salvation. Yet, no parent would simply “throw out the rules” for fear of raising a legalist. We instinctively know that our children benefit from obedience—even if it is, at times, only outward obedience. Grateful for the Ministry of Jim T

It is with joy that we thank God for the faithful ministry of a longtime Children Desiring God employee and send him off with a blessing as he moves into a new phase of life and ministry.

Jim T.

For 13 years Jim Tomaszewski has anchored our customer service efforts.

JT on the phone

Some of you may know Jim through phone conversations as he answered your questions about Sunday School curriculum, how to teach biblical truth to children or what it means to have a God-centered vision for ministry. He probably asked you a few insightful questions, too, and most likely prayed for you as you navigated the waters of children’s ministry and parenting.

JT leading small group

Jim loves children and is a very gifted teacher. His experience leading small group and helping guide and direct application has helped many children apply the truth of God’s Word to their own lives.

JT applying 1 Cor 10

We admire the fact that he is a man who applies Scripture to his own life as well!

JT training others

Jim is also a gifted trainer and has spoken at a number of events through the years. His passion to spread a vision for God-centered ministry and to equip whose who are implementing the vision in their own churches has allowed Jim to impact the lives of thousands of our ministry partners.

We’ve all been blessed by Jim’s thoughtfulness, strengthened by his encouragement, and challenged to think deeply because he asks the tough questions. And we dare not neglect to mention how his humor and joyful service has lifted our spirits! Children Desiring God is thankful to God for His faithfulness to Jim and his family.

JT and family
We pray this blessing from Psalm 125:1-2 as Jim moves into the next phase of his life and ministry:

Jim, may you continue to be one who trusts in the Lord, who like Mount Zion cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, may the Lord surround you from this time forth and forevermore.

Jim, we love you!

If you’ve been blessed by Jim in some way, please feel free to leave a comment for him!

Fighter Verses – A Resource for Bible Memory

Fighter Verse header

Most of you probably familiar with Fighter Verses – the Bible memory program developed for churches and families. Bethlehem Baptist Church has been using this resource since 1997 as a church-wide Bible memory program.

The plan is designed to memorize one passage per week for five years, which adds up to over 500 verses! The verses are strategically chosen to focus on the character and worth of our great God, battling against our fleshly desires, and the hope of the Gospel.

For those of you who are tech savvy, a phone app is available for iPhone®/iPad®, Android® and Kindle®. In line with John Piper’s exhortation about smartphones, this is one app to wield in fighting fire with fire.

Learn more about Bible memory at FighterVerses.com, where you can find the memory verse for the week, along with Bible memory helps, review tools, downloadable resources, songs, audio, and tips for launching a church-wide memory program.

On the Move

CDG Move

After 14 years of sharing office space with our brothers and sisters at Desiring God, we are on the move. We have been so blessed over the years to share facilities, office supplies, staff lunches, morning devotions and much more!

It will be bittersweet to venture out on our own, but we are excited about what God has planned for the future of Children Desiring God!

Jim & Knight

While we move, our helpful customer service team will still be available to assist with any needs you may have. However, we will only blog on Monday, Wednesday and Friday over the next few weeks as we pack, unpack and get settled in our new space.
