5 Reasons You Should Join Us At Our 2016 National Conference

2016 Children Desiring God National Conference

The team at Children Desiring God is joyfully working on the details of our National Conference being held just three months from now.  Please consider joining us at this event! Here are my top 5 reasons why I hope you’ll come.

2016 National Conference1. This theological theme is incredibly timely

The church in America and around the world is under extreme pressure to conform to the social and cultural norms of the day.  We must lovingly declare the whole counsel of God and be transformed by the entirety of God’s Word.  Everything God gave us in written form is from Him and for us. John Piper, Al Mohler, Bruce Ware, Mark Vroegop and David Michael will deliver inspiring and challenging messages bringing you into the glorious depths of God’s Word as they challenge you to embrace the whole counsel of God.

2016 National Conference2. The next generation needs you

We have been called by God to declare the truth about God, His Word and our rightful response to Him, to the next generation. We share this passion and this challenge–that the reality of our calling extends beyond the next generation. Those we serve now, who embrace God and His Gospel, will reach the generations yet unborn.

2016 National Conference3. This conference will equip you

The plenary sessions will equip you theologically, but that is not where the equipping ends. You will choose four (out of 60) breakout seminars in categories of Vision and Leadership, Classroom Training, Youth and more. Seminars will be led by experienced and passionate presenters whose mission is to inspire, encourage and equip you with ideas for practical application of the biblical principles they present.

2016 National Conference4. We want to encourage you

We are aware that ministry to the next generation, along with its joys, presents many challenges:

You are shepherding, instructing, and nurturing faith in children of all ages including youth. Some children are joyfully submitting to Jesus and many are not.

You have an enemy. Your position in Christ and your ministry to the next generation, causes this ancient enemy to rage against you as he prowls around like a lion seeking to destroy you (1 Peter 5:8).

You incur a heightened degree of criticism. Sadly, in conversations with others in ministry to the next generation, it is likely that you are not insulated from criticism, even from within your church.

So, the idea of encouraging you in your role is very sweet to us.

2016 National Conference5. You are not alone

Whether you minister as a lone volunteer in a church or are part of a team…at this event, you will be part of a large group of people who have a similar calling to serve the next generation. We want you to take advantage of the many opportunities to learn from each other. And it may not end at the conference. Our past events have served as a catalyst for “regional type” gatherings that continue into the future.

And…I am so excited that the College Park Worship team is going to lead us in
God-centered, Christ-exalting worship!
And…we will have great discounts on a large selection of books in our bookstore!
And…we will have a curriculum display in which you can interact with others about Children Desiring God Resources!Thank you for sharing in my joy and anticipation for this important gathering of pastors, parents, children’s ministry leaders, children’s and youth workers!

Join Us!

Our hope is that you will make plans today to join us! Our early bird discount is available through January 31. You can register online or call us at 877.400.1414 if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you in Indianapolis!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

This Christmas, may you and your family worship Jesus, the Savior of the world, the King of Kings, who is most special of all.

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

We wish you the merriest Christmas!

A New Year and a New Nonprofit—Children Desiring God!

CDG-for-web

He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings… (Daniel 2:21a)

We mark time predominantly in God’s good design of years. This is why, when a year comes to a close, individuals and organizations often look back in a time of reflection. What were our goals for the year? Were they realized? What unexpected events played a major role in the year’s outcome? Was I faithful to influence these outcomes?

It is good for us reflect on questions such as these and recognize that it is God Himself who changes times and seasons. He establishes and removes earthly rulers…God is in control of all things, and He works in us, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

God’s Work for CDG in 2015
One of many ways God worked for CDG this past year was in the establishment of a new nonprofit. Since 1997, CDG has functioned as a division of Desiring God. But in late October, we received notice from the IRS that our application to be an independent tax-exempt nonprofit was approved! Although we are just now announcing this transition, it has been in the works for years. Much time over the last 12 months was spent preparing for this change. On December 2, the Desiring God Board of Directors approved the final steps for CDG to move to a new 501c3 nonprofit organization. For now, we will continue to be called Children Desiring God.

At the December meeting, John Piper expressed his passion for the vision we share for the next generation and the importance of CDG’s work. He reiterated that this transition does not reflect a desire to distance Desiring God from CDG. Rather, these are necessary steps to see CDG flourish in its Gospel mission for the next 50 years.

We want millions of the next generation to know and cherish Jesus Christ as the only One who can save and satisfy their soul. Our calling is to produce God-centered, Bible-saturated, Christ-exalting resources to equip parents and churches as they instruct the mind, engage the heart, and nurture the faith of the next generation.

This organizational change allows us to form relationships with individuals who share a passion for the next generation and want to partner together to reach millions of the next generation. As we express our core values of passionate spreading and radical generosity, we acknowledge that this is made possible through partnerships with those who share our vision for the next generation.

Here are just two examples of reaching the next generation that flow from these core values:

600 missionaries in China have received Helping Children to Understand the Gospel, translated into Chinese. They plan to distribute this Gospel booklet to between 5,000 and 10,000 people in 2016.

7,500 children in one school system in El Salvador are being taught CDG curriculum, taking advantage of our “Pay What You Can Afford” program.

In the coming new year, we will continue to share more of these stories with you. We believe that you will be excited to hear about what God is doing around the world through the use of CDG resources. And, we would welcome your partnership in this mission of radical generosity in order to spread this vision. Please prayerfully consider becoming a Next Generation Partner by joining us in prayer and, if you are able, in financial partnership. Visit our Next Generation Partner page, or contact me directly to learn more.

Change Coming to the NIV Fighter Verses

Changes Coming to the NIV Fighter Verses

It has been a wonderful privilege to encourage you since 1997 to hide God’s Word in your heart through the Fighter Verse Bible memory program.

On January 1st, 2016, Children Desiring God will update all of the Fighter Verses resources in the New International Version (NIV) from the NIV1984 version to the NIV2011 translation. Due to restrictions from the publisher, we can no longer offer the 1984 NIV version after December 31. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

The Fighter Verses App

NIV2011 will replace NIV1984 verses in our Fighter Verses App in the next couple weeks.  This change will show up on your smartphone or tablet the next time you update your app from iTunes or Google Play.

Fighter Verses, Extended Verses and Foundation Verse Packs

You may purchase NIV1984 Fighter Verses, Extended Verses and Foundation Verses packs from our website through December 31, 2015.  Starting January 1, all NIV Fighter Verses resources purchased through our website will be in NIV2011. These NIV1984 resources will be on sale through the end of the year (Limited quantities available).

We know changing or updating translations can be difficult when memorizing. We pray this change will not deter you from the wonderful discipline of Bible memory.  Memorizing the Word is crucial to our fight of faith. Consider just a few amazing realities of God’s Word:

Every Word of God proves trueProv 30:5
God watches over his Word to perform itJer 1:12
God’s Word never returns emptyIs 55:11
God’s Word is truthPs 199:160
God’s Word is sharper than a two-edged swordHeb 4:12
People are saved by God’s WordJam 1:18
People are sanctified by God’s WordJohn 17:17
People have joy through God’s Word
Ps 119:14
God’s Word will remain forever
Is 40:8
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us
John 1:14

At this time, all Children Desiring God NIV curriculum will remain in the 1984 version. Curriculum and Fighter Verses resources in the English Standard Version (ESV) will not be effected by this change.

Now Available: God’s Gospel

God's Gospel family devotion book on salvation

We often think about what our children will inherit from those who have gone before them.

But what about the one inheritance that will last forever?

Christian parents have already faced the reality of their own sin, helplessness, and need for a Savior. And, though our young children’s lives often seem simpler than ours, their spiritual predicament is every bit as real. They are never too young to hear God’s good news for them as they face eternity–but as a parent, you may be wondering how to explain it to them in a way they can understand.

We are excited to announce the release of our favorite author’s first book. In God’s Gospel, Jill Nelson continues the Making HIM Known family devotional series as she demonstrates that even young children can learn about the gospel in full detail. This full color, illustrated book is perfect for parent to read with 5- to ten-year-old children. God’s Gospel has 26 chapters that are the perfect length for a family devotion time or one-on-one story time. Each chapter also includes several application questions along with an activity suggestion.

As you read through God’s Gospel, you and your children will discover God’s plan of salvation, starting with his very first designs for creation and moving through what went wrong, how important and hopeless our situation truly is, and what the wonderful news of our Savior’s sacrifice means for us.

Don’t just prepare your children for this life–prepare them for the one that matters most!

New Senior High Youth Curriculum Released: Open My Eyes

Open My Eyes

The Word of God is profoundly simple…and amazingly complex. Understandable to children…yet confounding to scholars. Only through the work of the Holy Spirit can our eyes be opened that we may “behold wondrous things” out of God’s law (Psalm 119:10).

Our brand new curriculum, Open My Eyes, teaches 9th-12th grade students how to study the Bible. Students will learn careful observation tools and sound interpretative principles as it provides pointed application suggestions so the Word of God might be understood as the biblical authors intended, and practiced in everyday life.

Open My Eyes begins with lessons on the authority, clarity, necessity and sufficiency of the Bible and the need to study the Bible and understand God’s plan of redemption. Then, youth will gain an understanding of the different genres of biblical literature (poetry, parables, gospels, etc.) and the inductive Bible study process as they practice reading, observation, interpretation and application skills. The curriculum concludes with five lessons aimed at the heart of the students, with the challenge not to presume upon the patience of God, but to respond to Him in faith.

Instead of being taught the same old Bible stories and lessons, I am being taught how to determine the lesson my own.–Sanya, student

You can learn more by viewing the Curriculum Scope & Sequence and the Sample Lessons. The following resources will equip you to teach the youth in your church or home:

Classroom Kit

Classroom KitThe Classroom Kit contains everything your class needs to start this curriculum. The main resource, the Teacher’s Guide, contains 40 lessons which alternate between a large group teaching time and small group discovery and discussion. Each lesson features a focus statement that summarizes the main ideas of the lesson and serves as anchors for understanding how to study the Bible. Students are encouraged to follow through on a personal application step each week.

Open My Eyes is not intended to be an exhaustive study of inductive methods, but rather an introduction to them, with the prayer that it will start youth on a lifetime journey of Bible study. These skills can be practiced in any inductive Bible study.

Student In-Class Notebook

Student At-Home JournalThe notebook provides students with a format for recording important points taught in the lesson as well as an opportunity to practice inductive Bible study skills as they mark up passages, make observations of the text and interpret the meaning. Youth will fill out charts, map passages and make an outline to discern the flow of the author’s thoughts. This record of their interactions with the Word will not only serve as a reminder of truths and Bible study skill taught, but will also be a journal of insights imparted by the Holy Spirit.

Student At-Home Journal

Student At-Home JournalWhy do students need to study at home? Besides reinforcing important truths and skills learned in class, the Student At-Home Journal provides an opportunity for the student to practice inductive Bible study skills. Without this practice, the student will be hampered in his use of sound observation, interpretation and application skills. Hearing must become doing in order for these skills to take root.

More importantly, the journal provides the student with the opportunity and encouragement to personally interact with the Word of God and to ponder His relationship to God. It becomes a means for the Holy Spirit to work in the heart of the student as he thoughtfully responds to questions, meditates on the Word, and considers what God is asking of him.

The Inductive Bible Study Handbook

The Inductive Bible Study HandbookThe Inductive Bible Study Handbook is a reference tool that teaches the 4 main steps of and tips for inductive Bible study. The steps include read, observe, interpret and apply.

Students will use the Handbook in conjunction with both the Student In-Class Notebook and the Student At-Home Journal. The Handbook can also be used as a stand alone resource.

Open My Eyes is a curriculum seeking to do just that – open the eyes of our youth to see the truths in God’s Word. Our children are confronted with a culture in which it is acceptable to define their own truth. And, accordingly, are influenced to interpret God’s Word in a way that seems right to them, rather than discerning the God-given meaning of the text. Open My Eyes equips them with tools, a methodology for proper interpretation, to rightly handle the Word of Truth. I am grateful that our church is reinforcing and strengthening skills that we seek to teach in our home.–Pamela, parent
