NOW AVAILABLE: Two New Booklets for Parents

Children Desiring God Blog // New Booklets for Parents

Children Desiring God is excited to announce the release of two, brand new booklets for parents, pastors, and those involved in ministry to children.

Children and the Worship Service

Children and the Worship Service, My Church NotebookJesus is opening His arms and inviting children to come to Him. One of the ways we reflect this truth to our children is by welcoming them into the most central, most regular, most valuable, and most corporate activity of the church. When we encourage families to worship together, we communicate to the children that they are a part of the congregation and, as such, should be included when the church gathers to worship. The presence of children also serves as a reminder to the church of its responsibility to nurture the faith of the next generation.

NOW AVAILABLE: To Be Like Jesus

Children Desiring God Blog // To Be Like Jesus Curriculum

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a common question asked of children and young people. Yet as interesting and insightful as their answers may be, this question pales in comparison to a more distinct and crucial one addressed in the Westminster Larger Catechism:

Q. 1. What is the chief and highest end of man?
A. Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever.

This question and answer defines our being, identity, and purpose: Godward. It fundamentally grounds us in what is unique about us—that we have been created to reflect and image forth the awesome majesty and worth of our Creator. And, in that imaging forth, we are to pursue the highest purpose: glorifying God! We glorify God by giving Him the honor, respect, love, devotion, obedience, and worship He so rightly deserves.

Navigating the Changes in the Nursery Curriculum

Children Desiring God Blog // Navigating the Changes in the Nursery Curriculum

There are some wonderful updates in the newly revised A Sure Foundation nursery curriculum, but some of our customers have had questions about what to order from among the various resources offered. See this blog post for specific information on how we have refreshed and expanded our nursery curriculum.

Some of our customers have asked what they should order to add to their current resources. Many appreciate the new format (with thumbnails of visuals and actions clearly marked in each lesson) and choose to replace their original leader’s editions with the updated Teacher’s Guides. Others decide to continue using the original leader’s editions and just want to add the new material. We have created a “Nursery Coordinator’s Volume 2 Supplement” to make this an easier option. The Nursery Coordinator’s Volume 2 Supplement contains:

  • 1 Older Toddler Volume 2 Teacher’s Guide (with the 16 additional lessons)
  • 1 Nursery Coordinator’s Brochure
  • 1 updated Curriculum Resources DVD, including the following PDFs:
    • Coloring Pages
    • Growing in Faith Together: Parent and Child Resource Pages
    • The Resource Packet
    • Truth Statement Posters
    • Story Pictures (for Young Toddler, and both Older Toddler Volumes 1 and 2)
    • The curriculum logo
    • A training video
    • Other teaching materials

The new 16 lessons in the Older Toddler Volume 2 can be used in a variety of ways. It was designed for toddlers 36 months and older who have not yet graduated to a preschool class. If you do not have a separate older toddler classroom, or do not need additional lessons for your Sunday nurseries, Volume 2 can be used for older toddlers as a midweek curriculum, for childcare during a women’s Bible study or small group time, or during VBS.

Another new item is the “Starter Kit” for those just beginning to use our nursery curriculum. This is a great option for those who want to use each of the refreshed Teacher’s Guides and the new visuals on the Resources DVD, and for those who prefer curriculum using the English Standard Version (ESV) translation of the Bible.

As always, if you need help deciding what to order, please contact our customer service team at 1.877.400.1414 or info@childrendesiringGod.org. Also, you should know that some past purchases may qualify for discounts, so please ask us about these options.

Dads: Make a Lasting Memory

Dads: Make a Lasting Memory

My children have many wonderful and notable memories with their dad. My husband was actively involved in their lives in so many different ways. But one particular memory stands out as unique and life-giving to both dad and children—the nightly blessing and prayer time. Every night, my husband said a blessing over our children and prayed with and for them. By the time our children reached adulthood, they had received more than 5,000 blessings from their father. A beautiful, lasting legacy!

Soon it will be time for our son to continue this spiritual legacy with his own soon-to-arrive son. At the top of the list of gifts we want to give our son to celebrate this occasion is A Father’s Guide to Blessing His Children by Pastor David Michael. It is the same resource my husband used for our children for all those formative years of their childhood and youth.

So dads, and those who want to bless them this Father’s Day, consider purchasing this inexpensive but valuable tool for encouraging both fathers and children. Here is a brief description of the resource:

A Father’s Guide to Blessing His Children

David Michael is convinced that pronouncing blessings upon our children is a powerful way to plead for God’s grace upon them and to give them a vision for what we hope they will become. Includes blessing cards, each based on a biblical text, with prayers that flow from a father’s heart for his daughters and a pastor’s heart for the children in his church.

NOW AVAILABLE: A Sure Foundation

A Sure Foundation Nursery Curriculum

So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: “see, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.”—Isaiah 28:16

Nurturing the faith of the next generations begins with the youngest in your church. The A Sure Foundation curriculum will help you develop a ministry steeped in prayer and overflowing with foundational Bible stories, truth statements about God and Scripture memory. We have refreshed and expanded this curriculum to equip you and your teachers to minister to children through the infant and toddler years.

The expanded A Sure Foundation now includes four parts: (more…)

The Great Work of Setting a Foundation

The Great Work of Setting a Foundation

Often nursery workers are seen as “baby-sitters” whose main job is to merely provide a safe environment for little ones while their parents are involved in the “real and important” ministries of the church. May these words from John Piper be a reminder to the church:

Jesus took the child-belittling culture of his day which defined “greatness” to exclude “receiving children” and he turned it upside down. He said: “Receiving children in my name is the world’s least, and the world’s least is my great.” So wherever the Spirit of Christ pervades, the people who receive children will no longer be the “least.” They will be “great.”

Really? Why? Because to receive a child in Jesus’ name (i.e., out of love, in his strength, and for his glory) is to receive Jesus, and to receive Jesus is to receive God the Father. Which means that the nursery may be more full of God than any other room in the church.

Encouraging Children to Memorize Scripture

Encouraging Children to Memorize Scripture

Scripture memory should be valued because of the blessing of putting God’s Word into your mind. However, a few incentives along the way can encourage those who have never tried Bible memory, motivate those who need help persevering in memorization and build community through shared celebrations. This is especially true for children and youth. Incentives need not be expensive and can be seen as celebrations.

Here are some recommendations for incentives for children and youth that can be given by churches or parents: (more…)

Are You Prepared to Fight the Fight of Faith?

Fight the Fight of Faith

My main reason for memorizing Scripture is not to teach anybody anything but to fight unbelief in my life. To fight discouragement in my life. To handle the sorrows that come across my life.

The devil is constantly shooting at me to be discouraged about myself, my family, my church, and the world. And the only way I know to fight back is with truths from God that counter that.

—John Piper, Desiring God

Those of us who believe in and receive Jesus as Savior are brothers and sisters in the family of God, fellow workers in God’s kingdom spreading His glory and the message of salvation from generation to generation to the ends of the earth, and fellow soldiers fighting the fight of faith.

As we are engaged in the ongoing battle of continuing in the faith, every Christian must speak truth to his soul, fighting not only the temptations of the flesh but also battling for faith. The assaults of the enemy come in the form of lies which threaten to diminish the joy of our salvation and our love for the gospel, belief in the promises of God, a hunger for God, single-minded devotion to Christ and our appetites for the spiritual rather than the temporal.

The Fighter Verses program is designed to equip you to fight the fight of faith by memorizing God’s Word. Each week individuals, families and churches are all encouraged to memory a verse or short passage of Scripture together. Are you prepared to fight the fight of faith?

Fighter Verses Collection

This core memory program of 260 passages is broken down into five yearly sets with one verse or passage to be memorized each week. The verses chosen for this collection focus on 1) the character and worth of our great God, 2) battling against our fleshly desires, and 3) the hope of the Gospel.

Foundation VersesFoundation Verse Collection

The Fighter Verses Study

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.—Ephesians 6:10-12

Resource Update: We are excited to release the Fighter Verses Songs for Set 2 on CD and iTunes in early 2017! Watch the blog for more details.
Unfortunately, we are not able to release Set 2 of the Fighter Verses Study this year. We hope to provide more study resources for Fighter Verses in the future.

Mothers as Disciplers of the Next Generation

Mothers as Disciplers of the Next Generation

Watching my daughter at home full time with four children, 5 years old and younger, is to watch a type of loving, synchronized chaos with moments of structured instruction thrown in. Here is a college-educated woman, who once worked with thoughtful adults, now deal with cute, but often unreasonable, little people. Yet through it all, she has fully and joyfully embraced this calling, knowing that it is a sacred calling to nurture the faith of the next generation. Mothers, listen to these encouraging words from Charles Spurgeon:

Charles Spurgeon QuoteO dear mothers you have a very sacred trust reposed in you by God! He has in effect said to you, “Take this child and nurse it for Me, and I will give you your wages.” You are called to equip the future man of God that he may be thoroughly furnished unto every good work. If God spares you, you may live to hear that pretty boy speak to thousands, and you will have the sweet reflection in your heart that the quiet teachings of the nursery led the man to love his God and serve Him. Those who think that a woman detained at home by her little family is doing nothing, think the reverse of what is true. Scarcely can the godly mother quit her home for a place of worship, but dream not that she is lost to the work of the church, far from it, she is doing the best possible service for her Lord. Mothers, the godly training of your offspring is your first and most pressing duty. Christian women, by teaching children the Holy Scriptures, are as much fulfilling their part for the Lord, as Moses in judging Israel, or Solomon in building the Temple.

Mothering Booklet CoverDo you know a busy mom who needs some encouragement as she seeks to nurture the faith of her children? Here is a resource to consider, Mothers: Disciplers of the Next Generations. This affordable booklet, written by Sally Michael, will challenge moms to look on their mothering with a biblical perspective, to seize the opportunities God gives them each day to encourage faith in their children, and to rely on Him as their sin-bearer and enabler to do the great work He has called moms to do.
