Do You Remember What You Learned in First Grade?

The ABCs of God Visuals

When I think back to my childhood, there are many fond memories that stick out in my mind. One in particular was from a Sunday morning. I sat in a small wooden chair, surrounded by a couple dozen other first grader students, and gazed at the big, shiny red box at the front of the room. What was inside? My teacher started pulling letters out of the box—16 to be exact—and started to spell a word. What word could be that long? INCOMPREHENSIBLE! What did that mean?

The ABCs of God Visuals

Another day, my teacher decided to make cookies for our class. Yum! Out of the box came sugar and butter and flour and chocolate chips and a bowl and a spoon and a spatula. She set them all out on a table and then just stood there, staring at them. She thought they could turn into cookies on their own. How silly.

The ABCs of God VisualsFast forward a decade later, and I was making new memories—this time as a helper in the first grade class. I remember the day the teacher started pulling out bricks with pictures of the plagues from the same, shiny red box. As she explained each of the ten bricks, she slammed them down on the table. The children gasped as one hit another so hard, it broke in half. There was also the day when there was a beautiful throne at the front of the class. The students were bewildered when they saw the special jewelry box—representing God’s greatness and worth—sitting among a pile of smelly, disgusting garbage, instead of being displayed by the royal throne.

Now, another decade or so later, I get to stop in the first grade classroom and see a child’s jaw drop as his teacher pours an entire box of cereal out in front of him. I also have the privilege of designing some of the visuals for The ABCs of God revised curriculum that will help children create the same memories I have.

The ABCs of God VisualsYou see, these memories are so much more than just some fun moments. When I failed to understand all of the nuances of the sovereignty of God, I remembered those 16 letters. God is incomprehensible, He is more than we can fully understand. When I was being lectured in biology about how the world was made through evolution, I remembered that table full of cookie ingredients and how they were helpless without a creator.

Every time I see a brick wall, I am reminded of those plagues and how God is an almighty God. He showed His power so His name could be known throughout the whole earth as the one true God. When I take out the trash, I am reminded that God took the hard path. He took my punishment for my sin to ultimately show His Father’s glory instead of being pampered like a king on earth.

ABCs of God VisualsAnd my morning bowl of cereal? Even though it will only satisfy me until noon, it is a reminder that God is bountiful. He more than enough to satisfy all of my desires. These memories remind me, and children in The ABCs of God classes, who God is, what He is like and how they should act toward Him. These memories help children see God’s greatness and worth every day in the world around them.

Each lesson in The ABCs of God curriculum begins with a concrete illustration like these to help children bridge what they can see and understand with abstract concepts they cannot see or find hard to understand. This deductive teaching style leads children to make observations and draw conclusions as the lesson progresses.

In the revised version of The ABCs of God, we have included 334 pages of new visuals for teachers to use in conjunction with common household items. The visuals assist in telling Bible stories, emphasis key points of the lesson and create illustrations that children will recall in everyday life. Here is a sample of the Visuals Packet:

Wowing Children with 35 Truths about God

ID-100382734

Our children and students long to be “wowed.” And the world presents them with a myriad of things to be wowed by—spectacular movies, sports, food, fashions, music, toys, and electronic gadgets…and on and on. My grandson happens to be wowed by pulleys—yes, those simple machines that can do all sorts of heavy lifting. Go figure.

But ultimately, what do our children and students need to be wowed by? What is truly worthy of their highest affection and praise? What will fully satisfy their “wow” hunger? There is only one answer to that: seeing and loving the incomparable greatness and grandeur of God!

How will this happen? Ultimately, by the sovereign grace of God bringing new life in our children’s lives so that they may know and treasure Him for who He is and what He is like. But we, too, have a grave responsibility and joyful privilege in this process, and that is to communicate to our children the manifold excellencies of God as revealed in His Word. Here are 35 scriptural truths about God (there are many more!) that we can begin to wow our children with:

God is…

  1. Almighty—He is all-powerful.
  2. Attentive—He constantly sees, hears, and acts in the world.
  3. Bountiful—God is more than enough to satisfy all our desires.
  4. the Creator of everything.
  5. the Deliverer—He saves His sinful people from the punishment they deserve.
  6. Eternal—He has no beginning or end.
  7. Exalted—God ranks far above everything else. He is the Most High.
  8. Faithful—God always does what He says He will do.
  9. Glorious—He shows His greatness and worth.
  10. Good—Everything God is and does is worthy of approval.
  11. Happy—He delights in being God.
  12. Holy—God is like nothing else. He is perfect and is separate from sin.
  13. Incomprehensible—He is more than we can fully understand.
  14. Jealous—God will not share His glory, or the honor and praise He deserves.
  15. King—He rules over everyone.
  16. Love—God gives of Himself for the joy of others.
  17. Merciful—God is kind to undeserving sinners.
  18. Never-Tiring—He never gets tired and never sleeps.
  19. Omnipresent—God is everywhere all the time.
  20. Omniscient—God knows everything.
  21. Patient—He is slow to anger and slow to punish.
  22. the Provider—God meets the needs of His creation.
  23. a Refuge—God is a place of safety for His people.
  24. Righteous—Everything God thinks, says, and does is right.
  25. Self-Sufficient—He doesn’t need anything.
  26. Sovereign—God has the right, wisdom, and power to do all that He pleases.
  27. Trinity—God is three Persons in one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  28. Unchanging—He never changes.
  29. Understanding—God remembers that we are weak.
  30. Victorious—God always wins, even over Satan, sin, and death.
  31. Wise—He causes everything to work out perfectly.
  32. Worthy—God is most valuable and deserves our greatest love, obedience, and worship.
  33. Wrathful—He is very angry at sin, and is right to punish sinners.
  34. Yahweh—This is God’s personal name and belongs to no one else.
  35. Zealous—God always acts with His whole heart.

Imagine a six- or seven-year -old being taught these truths about God! How can a new toy compare? Imagine the love children have for mom and dad—now they can see that God is infinitely more loving, kind, dependable, and deserving of their devotion and affection!

Does this seem like too much to communicate to these young children? Too lofty and deep? We have a newly revised resource aimed specifically at sharing and explaining these truths to six- and seven-year-olds. What is it? Check back tomorrow for a special announcement!

New Release: A Book That Every Parent Should Share With Their Children

Children Desiring God Blog // A Book That Every Parent Should Share With Their Children

Years ago, before my grandmother passed away, we would sometimes sit and watch the news with her. After it was over, she would invariably comment, “I’m glad I’m on my way out.” This was usually in response to some news report that demonstrated the decline of traditional moral values in our society. I wonder what she would say to today’s news?

One topic that would concern her for sure is the all-pervasive attention regarding gender identity. Something that seemed to be so sure and obvious—male or female, boy or girl—is now regarded as “fluid” and self-determined. Sadly, society is quickly accommodating the new norms in a variety of disturbing ways. As parents, grandparents, and teachers we need to prepare our children and students for this societal upheaval…but we need to do it, first and foremost, biblically. That will necessitate teaching them, from the earliest ages, God’s good and sovereign design of male and female as revealed in His Word. With that in mind, I can think of no better resource on this topic for parents to use with their children than the new book “God’s Design”.

GodsDesign_CoverHere is a brief description of the book:

Through this illustrated guide, parents can begin the discussion with both boys and girls about God’s wise and beautiful design for them. Wrong ideas about gender identity are lining up to influence our children, and they are no longer too young to learn what is means to be men and women!

Sally Michael and Gary Steward partner to bring a male-and-female approach to the topic of gender role – one that is united together under the authority of God’s plan in His Word. Through examples and stories from Scripture, they present this difficult topic delicately and in a way that even the youngest children can understand.

Don’t leave your children to be confused or ashamed of who they are – help them to rejoice in who God designed them to be!

“This wonderful little book brims with wonder at the Lord’s creative intelligence. It savors the way that Christ renews manhood and womanhood, calling us all to a better plan and a grander design than the world offers.”

—Owen Strachan, President, The Council on Biblical Manhood an Womanhood

Change Coming to the NIV Fighter Verses

Changes Coming to the NIV Fighter Verses

It has been a wonderful privilege to encourage you since 1997 to hide God’s Word in your heart through the Fighter Verse Bible memory program.

On January 1st, 2016, Children Desiring God will update all of the Fighter Verses resources in the New International Version (NIV) from the NIV1984 version to the NIV2011 translation. Due to restrictions from the publisher, we can no longer offer the 1984 NIV version after December 31. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

The Fighter Verses App

NIV2011 will replace NIV1984 verses in our Fighter Verses App in the next couple weeks.  This change will show up on your smartphone or tablet the next time you update your app from iTunes or Google Play.

Fighter Verses, Extended Verses and Foundation Verse Packs

You may purchase NIV1984 Fighter Verses, Extended Verses and Foundation Verses packs from our website through December 31, 2015.  Starting January 1, all NIV Fighter Verses resources purchased through our website will be in NIV2011. These NIV1984 resources will be on sale through the end of the year (Limited quantities available).

We know changing or updating translations can be difficult when memorizing. We pray this change will not deter you from the wonderful discipline of Bible memory.  Memorizing the Word is crucial to our fight of faith. Consider just a few amazing realities of God’s Word:

Every Word of God proves trueProv 30:5
God watches over his Word to perform itJer 1:12
God’s Word never returns emptyIs 55:11
God’s Word is truthPs 199:160

Ps 119:14

Why I Bought The Fighter Verses Coloring Book

Fighter Verses

The Fighter Verses Coloring Book Set OneThis fall was a big transition for our 4-year-old grandson. Because our church strongly encourages families to be together in corporate worship, childcare during the worship service ends at age 4. My husband and I, and David’s parents gladly affirm and embrace this policy established by our pastor and elders! So now David is with Daddy and Mommy during the entire service. However, getting used to sitting quietly is not the easiest discipline to master for an active little boy. Help!

Help is on the way…That is why I have already put in my order for The Fighter Verses Coloring Book, a brand new resource offered by Children Desiring God. Although David isn’t a reader yet, he can still benefit from this resource. It will be his “special sermon time book.” For example, before the worship service, Daddy and Mommy can read the memory verse on the page, talk about it, explain the picture, and then allow David to quietly color the picture during the sermon.

Do you know of a young child who is learning to sit still during the sermon? Consider giving him or her The Fighter Verses Coloring Book.
