A Bible and a Bible Reading Plan for Your Children

ESV Childrens Bible

Many years ago, the people at Crossway books decided to publish a children’s version of their ESV Bible. We felt very privileged when they asked us to give them a “wish list” of what we would like to see included in this new addition. It was a great experience for Sally and I to help them develop many of the resources included in the Children’s Bible and we are so pleased with the final product. This is our #1 recommended Bible for children and classrooms. Here is the publisher’s description:

Every child should have a Bible to call their own. The ESV Children’s Bible is a great choice, combining the reliability and beauty of the full ESV Bible text with more than 200 pages of full-color illustrations of Bible events and people that appear right where the Bible stories occur in the text. It is ideal for pre-readers, who enjoy the vibrant color illustrations, and early readers who want to have a “real” Bible to use and carry with them.

In the back of this Bible is an 80-page “Bible Study Helps” section designed for young children, complete with Bible charts and lists, the plan of salvation, important verses for growing as a young Christian, God’s Promises, tips for reading the Bible and learning to pray, key verses to memorize, and a dictionary of Bible words.

The ESV Children’s Bible is a colorful and complete Bible that kids love!

    • Size: 5.5″ x 8.5″
    • Larger 10.5-point type
    • 1,632 pages
    • Words of Christ in red
    • Full-color illustrations throughout
    • Introductions to each Bible book
    • Dictionary
    • Bible-reading plan for kids
    • Color charts and diagrams of biblical themes

Notice that the list includes a Bible-reading plan for children. We designed this to encourage children to read through selected portions of both Old and New Testaments. The plan gives options for younger readers and older readers, as well as check-off boxes to mark progress.

So as we head into the new year, with many of us incorporating a Bible reading plan into our schedules, don’t forget the children. The Bible-reading plan in the ESV Children’s Bible is a great resource for encouraging our children in the life-giving habit of daily Bible reading.

Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart,… (Jeremiah 15:16, ESV)

The ESV Children’s Bible 2015 edition is now available; and I’m saddened that it’s missing 65 pages of Bible Study Helps, including the Bible Reading Plan you mentioned. Each picture’s verse at the top and verse at the bottom are missing as well. It has lost some excellent resources. Is there any other way to access these helps now? (E.g., in booklet form?)

      Hi Gayle,
Thank you for your comment and your interested in these resources. At this time we do not have the material available in other formats but I did reach out to our authors and they have been looking into other ways to release those resources.
The Bible ready plan and other material written by Sally Michael and Jill Nelson was included in the 2008 (blue cover with illustration of Jesus with children) and 2005 (red and white cover) version of the ESV Children’s Bible from Crossway. You should be able to find these older versions on Amazon.
