Is This Book on Your Shelf? + Friday Contest

Bible Doctrine
For many, the term “systematic theology” sounds scary, too weighty, or maybe even boring. And a book with that title doesn’t seem like it should be included in a list of “must have” resources for people who minister to children. But in my years of working with children, and as a parent, I have found the book Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine by Dr. Wayne Grudem to be one of the most helpful books I own. That is why at CDG we are all in agreement that every parent and teacher should have this valuable resource, or the abridged Bible Doctrine: Essential Teachings of the Christian Faith . Why do we so highly recommend these two books? Here are a few reasons:

  • Biblically solid and jammed full of supporting Scriptures
  • Comprehensive in scope
  • Extremely readable and understandable—especially for laypeople (someone like me)
  • Balanced, and presents “opposing views” on key doctrinal positions
  • User friendly—you can easily find the topics you are looking for
  • Asks and answers the kinds of questions that we and our students sometimes are puzzled or troubled by
  • Provides clear, accurate definitions and explanations that can often be directly communicated to children with little or simple adaptations

Friday Contest—Because we believe that at least one of these two books should be on the shelf of every parent, teacher, and children’s and youth minister, we are going to give away a free copy of Bible Doctrine: Essential Teachings of the Christian Faith (list price: $32.99). Simply leave us a comment about why you would like to receive this resource, and your name will be entered in the contest. Leave your comment by Wednesday, October 23. We will randomly select the winner on Monday, October 28.

To be honest, I wouldn’t jump at reading this book. But the cool thing is, my husband loves reading about “opposing views” and then since he’s so pumped about it, he talks to me about what he’s reading and thinking which gets me kinda fired up to dig a little deeper, which I would then in turn, pick up this book to read! We work with the elementary and youth in our church, this would be a great resource!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this book! We have three children, our oldest is 5, we pray that God guides them early in their lives to Him. We hope we can help them build a solid fondadtion. In life there will always be hard times and challenges, I pray our children will find hope in The Lord and Joy in all things!

This would be a GREAT tool to use as an elementary Sunday school teacher. I’d like to share it with our associate pastor who is not only responsible for the children’s ministries at church but also a father of 4.

My wife and I have a one year old son. We have just been asked to lead the youth group at our church. On a volunteer basis. It is my vision to instill a love for God and who he truly is, both in my son, and the youth group that I am leading. I truly believe that youth should be taught theology (something I’m realizing they have disturbingly little understanding of). This book would help me to train my leaders and students in solid biblical and systematic theology.

Wow. I’m a mama who already has Systematic Thelogy on her Christmas list. 🙂
Would love to have this one also!

I teach Sunday school at my church. We’re a very new church, and don’t have many resources. I would love to win this, seeing as that it iisn’t something I have ever studied in great detail. Thanks so much for the opportunity!

“Bible Doctrine: Essential Teachings of the Christian Faith”, has been on my “wish list” for some time now. I have been a children’s Sunday school teacher for 27 years and counting, and now have the awesome opportunity to be training new recruits for the children’s ministry at my church! This would be a wonderful resource for all of our teachers and especially our trainees to be able to share as they prepare for training the next generation. I am discovering that the doctrinal knowledge of my trainees is severely deficient and this would be a wonderful tool to be used in equipping the saints, who will be leading our children! Thank you for considering us! SDG Mrs.Dove

I teach 4-5 graders at our church and as a father and husband am responsible for supporting the spiritual growth of my wife and 3 boys (6, 9, 12). The resources to help build their faith and equip them with truth would be a blessing and I would use them often.

BTW – I attended the CDG conf in May. What a great experience. I learned a lot that I’ve put to use teaching the CDG curriculum this year. Thank you so much.

I volunteer in children’s ministry and have three young daughters. A resource like this would prove very helpful as I try to lay strong foundations of biblical truth in their lives.

I have been working with children for the past 13 years and this resource would be wonderful to use as we not only teach the children but as we education the parents to teach these Bible doctrines in the home.

I would like to give the book to the two teacher of my youth group where I serve as a pastor.

I have been in the church my whole life and find myself still struggling with doctrinal issues. I would like to understand difficult doctrinal issues better for myself, be able to offer solid answers for my children, and present doctrine accurately for the kids we teach in Sunday School. I’d love to be entered into the drawing 🙂

I have an 8 year old who asks complex questions and I don’t always have the answer. I would love a good resource to help me! Besides, her 5 year old sister is starting to ask deep questions too!

I would love to own this book to use as my husband and I teach our children. And I know I could learn a lot, too!

When I received your email about today’s Friday contest, I wonder if this book is to support the Bible. There are many books out there that say that do but don’t. The staff at Desiring God does a fine job at steering “fans”, teachers, lay people, etc to Jesus and that is why I’m entering in today’s contest. God has given me an awesome opportunity to disciple another in teaching children’s. An awesome God given opportunity to pour into another to teach students the gospel.

  17. Shannon October 18, 2013 at 4:50 pm #

I would love to use this book in personal study, sermon prep, discipleship….ok I’d pretty much use this book all the time. Blessing!

My husband and I have the blessed responsibility of training up our two children in the way they should go. We recently checked out the Systematic Theology book from the library to aid in our Bible study, but just had to return it today. We would love to have this Biblical doctrine book on our shelf as a resource to aid in our family’s pursuit of knowing God more through His Word.

Usually I don’t participate in such contests, but ironically just this past night I went online searching for Wayne Grudem’s theology books and theology lectures desperate to find answers for the growing list of questions from my 6-year-old son and twin 4-year-old daughters. I had never thought that it would be preschoolers and elementary-school kids that would finally push me to searching out theology books. I am finding that with adults you can actually get away with knowing less than with kids. Fancy and ambiguous explanations don’t cut it for my kids; they keep asking…til I can give a clear-cut answer without all the fluff. I love it!…but I feel a growing sense of responsibility to give them accurate information and a truly Biblical perspective. My kids are forcing me to get to the bare bones of my belief system. And these are just my three oldest kids. There is a two-year old and a two-month old that will be bombarding me with questions in no time. I thought I knew enough, but, boy, was I wrong!

  22. Candice October 19, 2013 at 10:53 pm #

I have children young and old still find myself stumbling for a concrete answer on doctrinal issues. It would be a blessing to have this resource, for myself, my children and the kiddos we teach in Sunday School!

  23. Marcia Olynyk October 20, 2013 at 9:14 pm #

Because I would love to give this book to my husband, as a gift. He is passionate about teaching grade5-6 boys and also our 2 children.

  28. Mike October 23, 2013 at 8:54 am #

I am a pastor and this book is on my shelf. But I know it is likely not on the shelf of young parents in the church family where I serve. My desire would be to give it away to a couple or an individual whom I trust would value its content and put it to use as a tool for discipleship.

  29. Michael Daniel Dunkin October 23, 2013 at 8:57 am #

I can’t think of another book that would help a Christian grow bigger in their faith! Praise the Lord for He uses people for His good purpose!

  30. Kim October 23, 2013 at 8:57 am #

  36. Adam October 23, 2013 at 10:02 am #

Sunday School teachers and students at Charlotte Baptist Chapel have greatly benefitted from the Children Desiring God (CDG) curriculum over the past four years.

Therefore, if CDG says “Bible Doctrine: Essential Teachings of the Christian Faith” is a helpful resource then I have no doubt that it is! I would therefore like to receive this resource so that I can share it with my fellow Sunday School teachers.

  37. Carmen Valla October 23, 2013 at 11:04 am #

just trying to make disciples, teaching them to obey all He has commanded them. Clear truth, strong doctrine makes this a reality.
